Step-by-step guide to content pruning

Content pruning is, put simply, „trimming content”. It is a multi-stage process of removing, merging and optimising existing content on a website to improve the quality of the site as a whole. This process could be described as a strategic tid-up, which is particularly useful for websites that have a large amount of published content.

Step 1. Content audit

The first stage involves gathering all URLs and analysing their effectiveness. Factors assessed include organic traffic, visibility in search results, conversions, content quality and how up-to-date the content is. The aim is to identify pages that are not meeting their objectives.

Step 2. Analysis and classification

Based on the data collected, each piece of content is assigned to one of the following action categories: leave as is, update or expand, merge with other content, or delete. At this stage, the cause of poor performance is also identified, e.g. outdated information, keyword cannibalisation or low user value.

Step 3. Implementing the changes

The planned actions are then carried out. This may include updating and expanding articles, merging similar content, implementing 301 redirects following the removal of pages, improving internal linking, and optimising SEO.

Step 4. Monitoring the results

Once the changes have been implemented, the results should be monitored. Changes in organic traffic, keyword rankings, the number of indexed pages and conversions are analysed. This allows you to assess the effectiveness of content pruning and plan further optimisation measures. These four stages form a closed cycle which is worth repeating regularly to maintain the high quality and effectiveness of the content on the website.
